Remarkable! This Family Farm's Fruits Are Making Their Way to Russia
In recent years, Bijiang District in Tongren City, Guizhou Province, has been actively supporting the development of family farms. By rolling out policy incentives, financial assistance, and technical support, the district has given family farms a solid foundation to thrive. These efforts are driving agricultural progress, boosting farmers’ incomes, and positioning family farms as the “new engine” of the agricultural economy.
It’s grapefruit harvest season, and at Pi Zhifeng’s family farm in Group 1 of Heping Community, Heping Township, rows of golden grapefruits are ripening to perfection. Walking into the orchard, you’re greeted by trees heavy with large, fragrant fruits, a sight that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate.
Spanning over 120 mu (about 8 hectares), the farm is operated by Pi Zhifeng and his family. Using leased land, they cultivate fruits such as grapefruits and tangerines.
“Our family farm started operations in 2017. We’ve adopted an ecological approach, combining fruit cultivation with livestock breeding. We grow Sanhong honey grapefruits and Jinqiu sugar tangerines, while raising chickens, pigs, and geese under the trees. The farm produces about 100,000 jin (50 tons)of fruit annually. Starting last year, our products began reaching international markets. Over the past two years, we’ve sold nearly 40 tons, which has significantly boosted our income,” said Zhang Linlin, manager of the Pi Zhifeng Family Farm.
The farm owes its success to favorable conditions, including abundant sunlight and soil perfect for growing grapefruits. Combined with meticulous care—every step from planting and fertilizing to pest control adheres to organic standards—the farm produces grapefruits known for their thin peels and exceptional flavor.
Thanks to its high-quality produce and organic branding, the farm’s grapefruits have become a consumer favorite. Their popularity has even extended beyond China, with shipments traveling via the China-Europe freight trains to reach markets in Russia.
But it’s not just the market demand driving this success. With guidance from district and municipal departments and the expertise of agricultural specialists, Pi Zhifeng’s family farm has paved the way for innovative, high-quality development in the grapefruit industry.
“We’re promoting an integrated approach that combines planting with breeding. By using grass as mulch, we improve soil fertility while raising pigs, geese, and ducks under the trees. This creates a sustainable, eco-friendly production cycle. Through this model, we’ve reduced the use of pesticides and herbicides, resulting in higher-quality fruits that meet export standards,” explained Huang Zaifa, Senior Agronomist at the Bijiang District Development and Reform Bureau and a municipal-level technical expert.
Over the years, the farm has achieved organic certification and was named a model family farm in Bijiang District in 2018. It has also collaborated with local universities and organizations, becoming a hub for industry-academia research and rural skill training.
The success of Pi Zhifeng’s family farm reflects Bijiang District’s broader efforts to foster new agricultural enterprises like family farms and cooperatives. Through targeted policies, the district has encouraged the development of specialty fruit industries, helping farmers achieve greater prosperity.
“Heping Township currently has 104 family farms, including four provincial-level model farms and ten municipal-level model farms. We focus on supporting farms with strong economic performance and significant demonstrative effects by providing financial, technical, and policy aid. To date, we’ve supported 26 family farms with a total of 830,000 yuan in funding. This has boosted farmers’ enthusiasm, optimized agricultural practices, and advanced the modernization of agriculture,” said Mao Dongyong, Director of the Agricultural and Rural Comprehensive Service Center in Heping Township.
